Mijn kennismaking met Mark Linkous, alias SParKleHOrsE, was op Oor's cd-sampler World of Noise in 1996. Daarop stond het nummer Spirit Ditch, dat mij aanspoorde heel snel de cd te kopen met de onwaarschijnlijke titel
Dit hoogstandje in lo-fi is sindsdien een van mijn favoriete cd's, vol songs met gefluisterde zang begeleid door lieflijk getokkel op de gitaar tot noise-uitbarstingen en een hoofdrol voor een aftands antwoordapparaat. Mark weet mij hiermee tot op het bot te ontroeren. Lijdend aan zware depressies deed hij afgelopen weekend een zelfmoordpoging die bijna verkeerd afliep. Hij schoot zich door het hoofd maar bleef in leven. Hij overleed uren later in het ziekenhuis.
