De meesten kennen het lied 'Sunny' waarschijnlijk en helaas van Boney M. Het was echter een hit in 1966 voor Bobby Hebb, een zwarte singer-songwriter uit Nashville, Tennessse, geboren in 1938. Gisteren is hij aan de gevolgen van longkanker overleden. Hij schreef Sunny de dag nadat J.F. Kennedy en zijn broer binnen 24 uur na elkaar vermoord waren.

In augustus 1966 heeft hij met de Beatles door de VS heeft getourd, niet als voorprogramma, maar als mede-headliner, wat zijn status destijds vrij goed aangeeft. Het was de tournee voorafgegaan door de uitspraak van John Lennon dat de Beatles waarschijnlijk populairder waren dan Jezus, rituele lp-verbrandingen tot gevolg hebbend. Het zou hun laatste tournee worden... 
Bobby Hebb stond nu niet bepaald op mijn trommelvlies geëtst. Sunny was zijn enige grote hit, zo iemand noem je een one hit wonder. Sunny is wel talloze malen, ook door de groten der aarde zoals Frank Sinatra, James Brown en Stevie Wonder gecoverd. 
Bobby bracht nog wat singles uit, een ervan een soulballad 'A satisfied mind' geheten, ook uit 1966. Nu wil het toeval dat twee van mijn favorieten, The Walkabouts en Johnny Cash dit nummer ook, zij het als 'Satisfied Mind', hebben opgenomen. Hun versies klinken, hoe kan het ook anders, als rasechte country-nummers. Strekking van dit lied is trouwens dat geld niet gelukkig maakt; Can't buy me love, zeg maar.Anyway, 1966 is in mijn oren hèt topjaar qua Top-40 (Radio Veronica!!).
